How to capture something that avoids capture. Photography is a tool, a mechanical procedure; to photograph dancing contains all the relevant contradictions of the entire medium. Dancing often happens in crowded public spaces. It is a performance, a series of poses, poses which may imply a still photograph. This is most obvious in (but not limited to) Vogueing as a style of dance, dancing which uses images from Vogue magazine as source material. Despite lending itself to photographs, it is often frowned upon to take pictures of someone dancing, as I’ve been scolded off of several dance floors for “ruining the vibe.” It is considered a private performance, a moment of expression shaped by both the presence of cameras and the assumed absence. Dance like no one’s watching.
